Third Eye Chakra : Ajna

One major detail regarding Chakras: They are energetic centers. (see subtle body) The energy within a chakra can be in deficiency, surplus, or balanced and free flowing. Don’t know where to begin? Read Chakras- At-A-Glance.

Ajna: The 3rd Eye Chakra: The 6th Chakra: The Sanskrit word AJNA translates to        “Command or Authority.”  It is located in the center of the eyebrows. The THIRD Chakra is enriched by the color violet or a glowing iridescent blue.

Appropriately, the AJNA is associated with all elements particularly that of Space, as this tattva is a portal for intuition.

  • In the THIRD EYE wisdom and humanity are matured and we’re able to bridge the gap between our grounded human experience and that of the elevated Divine Consciousness. AJNA is is a powerful conduit for visualizations as it is closely tied to the optical nerves. It is also one of the final points of the Ida and Pingala Nadis, where our lunar-masculine and solar-feminine energies converge.
  • The THIRD EYE Chakra is represented by a two-petaled lotus. One petal stands for GU (darkness/ignorance) and the other RU (light/knowledge.) Together these syllables bring Paravidya, “complete” knowledge forward as opposed to Aparavidyā, “incomplete” knowledge, ruled by the intellect and limited. This complete knowledge engages with the Higher Self in a constant way and reminds us of the duality that exists in nature.

birds of prey

  • The animal for AJNA is the Ardhamatra. This is an incredibly elusive Sanskrit word that doesn’t have a ton of information out there, however my interpretation is that it is best expressed as birds of prey. Hawks, Falcons, Eagles, Owls, etc.
These birds are nurturing and intuitive, historical and have a reptilian element to them. They bring keen observation, and great responsibility. They rarely miss the mark as they are the epitome of integrity.  Because the element celebrated here is space, it is said that the THIRD EYE Chakra is where the wings of the soul can finally unfold and take flight. Find a way to connect to the powerful grace of Birds of Prey.

Ground yourself to better soar: Counter-intuitive but critical:     The thin line between inspiration and insanity.

“What is the difference between a comedian and a homeless person screaming in the subway?”

A paying audience.

The awakening of AJNA is critical for personal evolution. Until our THIRD EYE is awakened, we are often incapable of understanding ourselves. The abilities that lie in AJNA are of great assistance for those suffering from psychic problems. (ALL OF US)

The GuRu Principle provides us with Viveka: the ability to discern reality from unreality. A balanced THIRD EYE is the antidote to:

  • depression
  • personality disorders
  • anti-social disorder
  • schizophrenia
  • any time you feel out of control or overwhelmed by emotions

AJNA penetrates the subtle world, all that we experience yet cannot put into words. Yogic philosophy has coined these experiences as our ‘inner cause’ or more completely stated, the origin of thought, as Antahkaranaand this one concept is comprised of the cooperation of four functionalities.

  1. Manas: The low-level mind; Sensory perceptions. All of our physical attributes.

  2. Chitta: The subconscious; Impressions we use to navigate experience.

  3. Ahamkara: The ego. Our constructed identity                                                                 ( Unconscious + Subconscious + Consciousness)

  4. Buddhi: Inner wisdom; Higher Self; Divine Consciousness.

If your THIRD EYE Chakra is blocked:

The nature of society is a judgmental one, and the pitfall of being part of a community is that we sometimes borrow other people’s logic and language to discredit who and what we are in order to fit in. We feel nuts for the things we think and see behind closed eyes. We do not trust the process of life. We often compare ourselves to other people.

“I shall never be able to understand it, but there must be someone who can. And I shall have to create that someone who can inside myself.”

– Excerpt from ‘The Passion according to G.H.’

We condemn ourselves for our own beautiful and natural sixth sense because this sensitivity makes us vulnerable and who wants that? So, we reject it. We kick and scream.

Symptoms may include:

  • You’re lacking the big picture of life and feel constricted by circumstance
  • Feel as though you cannot progress towards your goals
  • Reject spiritual aspects or connections in life
  • Narrow-minded thinking and behavior
  • Lack of clarity or focus

If AJNA is Over-Active:

There is regular mind stuff, but there’s other stuff that rises to the surface of our cognitive experience. All of that strange chemical stirring is energy. That’s all it is. You can hardly believe it, right? But energy can sometimes be too much. It can control our every move, charging us to act on things that are not rooted in reality. They can distract and disconnect us from the human experience.  When your visions go beyond inspiration or meditative trance and instead lessen the power of your Antahkarana (functionality), you know its time to get grounded.

  • You are often lost in fantasy
  • Over-indulgent in thoughts and visions
  • Talk a lot about things that you want to do but are not actually working towards
  • Have dreams every night or very frequently
  • Thoughts of Grandeur – Self Important
  • headaches
  • insomnia
  • vertigo
  • nausea

Balancing your THIRD EYE Chakra:

Meditation: The third eye is the center of higher wisdom. We have already stated how this chakra is guided by Viveka, clarity, and the GURU Principle of bringing oneself out of darkness and into the light. Silence the mental chatter, the to-do’s lists, all of your worrying that comes between you and your Higher Self.

  • Visually: See your THIRD EYE in the center of your eyebrows. It is no mistake that the eyes are called a window into the soul. Envision blue, purple, and iridescent hues coming together in the magnificent texture and depth we often see in the universe of someone’s eye.

Video

  • Musically: Repeat “AUM.” This is the phonetic spelling of the Sansksrit word and concept of OM. The sound “A” starts way back in the back of the throat with a wide open smiling mouth, continuing to the “AU” (O-sound) with lips pursed in a circular shape, to the final closed lips vibrating an “M,” and continuing audible vibrations until all breath has left the lungs.

The mantra associated with AJNA’s energetic shift :

ASATO MĀ SAT GAMAYA –

Lead us from unreality to reality

TAMASO MĀ JYOTIR GAMAYA –

Lead us from darkness to light

Watch me sing it here. 😉

Acknowledge Your Surrounding: You are not alone. Everything is a message or symbol. Remember you are connected to everything, which means everything is also connected to you.

Bugs – The eternal darkness of the underworld, the primordial, the behind the scenes, literally OM: the deep vibration or pulse at the center of the earth. The sight of them can sometimes be uncomfortable but their rituals bear the true essence of survival and cooperation. If anything their presence gives us a better understanding of the word “busy.” Nature never rushes, yet everything gets done.

Animals – Do you randomly have cameos in your life? Like that time you saw an owl in the middle of the day, or a mountain lion, a fox that no one else caught a glimpse of. Something rare and unexpected that was specially created for you alone. Since the beginning of time, animals have taken on a variety of  significance across cultures. Everything has a purpose, and a sighting should be regarded as the blessing that it is.

Words – Have you ever seen a billboard at the perfect moment, a random sticker when you least expect it, some message that is left there for you even though it didn’t have your name written with it? It could be a full sentence or just a phrase that somehow taps into the inside joke that only you and someone else may know of? How is this happening and why at this particular moment when it matters so much? The Universe has an amazing sense of humor and irony is never lost on her.

Scents – Do you smell things at times that are not actually there? Is this your brain triggering a memory or chemicals playing tricks on you. Why does someone bring a smell into your world at that particular moment, and why did your olfactory gland commit that smell to memory in such a critical way that you feel the emotionally connected to a scent?

Songs – Ever notice how your iPod or radio plays songs you were thinking of, perhaps a song you wanted to hear? Is this coincidence, or not?

Random Vehicles – What about directly introducing symbols and messages into your daily life. Do you write down your dreams and reflect upon them? Do you read your horoscope or play with tarot cards with friends or a lover?

Consider yourself an Artist. And art as a way of living:

Creativity is a very efficient way to let go of what is taking up space in your logical mind. It is also really helpful to think of your habits and the way you interpret the events of your life as an art form. This world is beautiful, enjoy it! The sound of the ocean, the bloom of a flower, the song of a bird, and the sweet smell of rain – all ask nothing from you. Do your part and put some beauty back in while you can.

  • For those who are blocked : Use the senses to drift into a dream-like state.
  • Be curious about symbolic meanings, from different cultures and time periods
  • Surround yourself in nature, meditative walks in the forest.
  • Find something or some event as your GURU. Use this to initiate new behavior that goes away from darkness and into the light.
  • For those that are over-active : Limit yourself to one vision, do your best to stay with it, reduce it to a form, a shape, a color, a texture – something concrete and manifest that into reality using your hands and focused energy.

 Asana:

Naturally, movement is one of the greatest ways to move energy throughout the Chakra system. Almost all poses – simply because a quiet mind and setting intentions for a practice helps stabilize the THIRD EYE Chakra, but there are some poses in particular that should help to create a free flow of energy in AJNA.
  • Child’s Pose (Balasana)
  • Belly down Savasana with head resting on top of stacked closed fists.
  • Up-Dog / Cobra / Locust – focusing on opening the THIRD EYE Chakra
  • Standing Half Forward Bend (Ardha Uttanasana)
  • Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)
  • Wild Thing (Flipped Dog)
  • Shoulderstand (Salamba Sarvangasana)

If your THIRD EYE Chakra is balanced:

Only wisdom and clarity of consciousness liberate us from Samskara. This is the Sanskrit word to describe the impressions we have recorded from very early in our development. It is the stories we repeat and react to in the life we think we are having instead of manifesting a life we love. It is the unhealthy cycles that we are liable to repeat and have mistakenly attached to our identity. The THIRD EYE is the only way to see the wisdom already residing deep within. To be centered in the AJNA means to be perfectly conscious holding ourselves as the GURU of every experience and to behave with Viveka.

Chakras At a Glance

Imagine a deck of cards shuffling before you.. Each card represents an idea, a challenge or circumstance, a style, a certain way of thinking, mannerisms, determination and doubt, some narrative that repeats, lessons you have learned and pass to others, the stories you tell. This is your hand. In essence, this is your life. Every day, if you try, is a day to draw another card into your hand. You have the chance for endless combinations. How will these new cards interact with what you are already holding and like all good card games, you get to discard.

7 chakras.jpg

The chakras is a story of becoming – the building of a perfect hand. Or a tale of waking Kundalini : aka moving her through 7 energetic centers.

Kundalini, represented by a snake, is the spiritual energy which lies dormant in all of us. Practitioners of Kundalini Yoga emphasize that Meditation, Pranayama, Kriyas and Asana are a means to cultivate this energy and transform it into Divine Consciousness.

Why would a snake represent consciousness?

Because a snake can literally shed its skin and re-create itself. This animal embodies the ultimate design of renewal: releasing that which blocks growth. It seems so obvious now that it would be a snake, right? Duh.

redroot.jpg1. Okay, so this snake, aka our unconsciousness as she has not woken just yet. (The things we have no idea about- past lives shit- cruel karmic stuff) is located in MULADHARA. (the 1st or Root Chakra). Root as in the lowest spot if we are seated. It is the stuff we think we need, the source of our greed and impatience. Wait, why is our unconscious resting in our anus? Who put it there? Why would the constant burning yearning desire for for things like food and shelter be sitting in my ass, perhaps making me act like an asshole? Hmmm…

orangewater22. The subconscious (the things we feel, but really don’t understand- aka memories and trauma) is caught up in SWADISTHANA (the 2nd or Sacral Chakra.) So, all of our feel good- ice cream truck song memories- as well as the really fucked up shit we’ve been through is bottled up in our genitals. That’s right our subconscious feelings, every last emotion, all of our water-like qualities are in touch with our reproductive hormones. Whaaat? My trauma is connected to my baby-maker? FUCK. To boot, this is a circular chakra with, as you guessed it, cyclical movement, the habits and routines- some are totally crazy and others mundane. Our apathy and indifference, our uproar and mania, that mistake we can’t stop making is all here in our sexuality. The things we just accept, the “Fair-Enoughs” of the world. If we never move Kundalini past this point, we run the risk of experiencing a life that can’t get deeper than the surface or learn from a mistake. Do you want all the beauty of this world and all of your transformative power to be out of reach? Probably not.

yellowfire.jpg3. Kundalini is kind of awake in MANIPURA (the 3rd or Solar Plexus Chakra.) She’s tossing and turning pulling the covers off, exposing her position now in the belly-button. From the gut of your experience, consciousness is preparing, stretching, and beginning to rise. Do you think critically about the shit you’re going through or are you a zombie? Whatever you do, don’t go full zombie. This is the place of your instinctual sensation. Any last one of us can slip into old habits if we’re not careful to avoid blind reaction, if we’re not diligent to take a moment and be conscious. At this point, we are slowly advancing, generating the willpower to make the day and life as we want it, but are we strong enough? Do we have the confidence or would we rather just stay sleeping? How lazy are you? Did you just hit snooze three times? Really? Three times. Also, didn’t you say you weren’t going to drink last night? Don’t be pathetic. But we’re not pathetic. We know we have to wake up. We know what the day will bring. We’ve made our lists- We’ve got our flippy-floppys! You are adjusting to the light and with a squint you and Kundalini have accepted the duty as consciousness. We acknowledge what we are and what we’re not and that it takes all kinds, but above all else, to thine own self be true.

anahata with eight petals inside4. Finally, Kundalini becomes animated in ANAHATA (the 4th or Heart chakra) and we are upright. Extending in all directions, you open your chest to roll out the neck and shoulders. She unfolds to the beat of your heart and you too are filled with an expansive feeling of happiness and love. She moves in contractions which if you’ve seen any birthing scene, has intense pain followed by incredible relief and clearing. Often when finding compassion with others, we have to first start with ourselves. It is no mistake that flight attendants tell us to first secure our own mask before assisting others. In order to find your rhythm you have to get out of  your own way. Dancing does not to begin with thinking, instead you have to be light on your toes and lightly pervade everything. Here your consciousness is a sense of peace and grace, and by grace I mean you care and respect for all living things. All things? Ahimsa? Yes, even that guy. You’re limited by nothing, not even that guy…. Do you see how once you elevate yourself, you become untouchable? Oxygenated blood flows in abundance circulating and vitalizing the entire system with compassion and creativity and with each breath cycle you magnetize more energy to move or dance. 😉

blue purification5. What would creativity and compassion be if it wasn’t shouted into the world and communicated directly to the hearts of everyone sharing this experience. Kundalini uses our throats in VISSHUDI (the 5th or Throat chakra) to give sound to our thoughts. The beat from our heart turns into song here. The vibration of our vocal chords purifies thoughts and we become compelling. Say whaaat? If and only if we have tapped into our truth, understood the art of silence, and acknowledged the connection to everything around us. If and only if, I learn to take pleasure in vulnerability and communicate in every experience with the intention of making it a spiritual one, will I find my voice. And, when we do we can literally bring people together and create reality. And like Kundalini, we become magical, matching our outsides with our insides. Nothing stands in your way, as you are part of everything, having embodied all the elements, and can will every thing into cooperation. Boom!

thirdeyevision.png6. Wholly complete, the consciousness gazes out onto the horizon from AJNA (The 6th or Third Eye Chakra.) Maybe it’s not a horizon, maybe it’s a planetary view, or the eyes of a dog or maybe its a horrific scary scene, your worst nightmare in fact, things you don’t want to know, can’t handle or aren’t ready for. One simply can’t predict Third Eye visions but active listening is required for good communication, and active living is required for contentment. You must be part of the process particularly if you seek enlightenment. You must be your own GuRu – Out of the Darkness and into the light. Without effort from you, Kundalini will stay coiled until you’re ready to explore AND utilize your spiritual energy. You have to apply wisdom and Viveka, the discernment of reality from unreality. Our two physical eyes see the past and the present, while the Third Eye reveals the future. And together, it is God. It is the God in you. It is waking the God that has been in you and opening his or her eye in the middle of your eyebrows. You were born with it right there all along and never even knew.

WAIT… Hold the fuck on! A snake, named Kundalini, that happens to be resting in my ass will eventually wake up, move through my sexuality, my instinct, my heart, give my my voice and then take me to meet God through the visions of my Third Eye – the connection to the Divine Consciousness? And I have to make sense out of all of it? I have to be the one to say what is real and what is not? Yes. Fuck. The body will function of course without cultivating this awareness BUT you will inevitably remain unconscious. (FULL ZOMBIE)

whitepurplelight.jpg7. Kundalini is calmly smelling the air around her as she is erect at SAHASRARA (The 7th and Crown Charka) This is it. That bridge is finally complete. Construction is over. The last piece of the puzzle has been pressed down and smoothed over. Your connection to the future has been finalized, well not even, it’s the future past and present in one experience. Time slows down and you become aware of how everything is completely interwoven, now that time can’t play tricks on your experience. It is all one. You are living and trusting, trusting because you are alive and alive because you have faith that this life is exactly what it is supposed to be. This is living meditation. This is Bliss.

~Namaste~

How to SPRING into Action [May 1]

Life remembers all the things you do and don’t and she brings them back and then forces you to laugh at your own stupidity. You will have the same lesson over and over again until you learn it. The same things, crazy and strange things that at the time …are so crazy it seems like nothing like this has ever happened before or to anyone else, but in reality… this is not your first time on this ride, and all your besties know it.

Learning to Love yourselfis the definitionof change copyWhy don’t we learn the first time? Or any time after that? Why must we repeat these experiences? Why and how do we forget? When we get the message in the moment we are so clear and sure as we say to ourselves, “Never again will this sort of thing happen.” Then, all of a sudden you’re kind of back where you were, but not really.. but sort of… sure things are different but what’s actually different? Not much. The first emotion is mad, mad as hell. But then… We laugh. We cry. We over analyze. We stay distracted for as long as we can. We listen to the problems of other people. We try to motivate them to do something to feel better, to make a difference. We ruminate on what is ailing them and why this dilemma is happening to them in the first place. We compare our life to theirs and then we shit on ourselves for forgetting that we had our own problems to solve.

This is the beginning of the complete examination of everything that has brought us to this moment and in one breath, maybe in the shower or during a commute, its non-stop and you don’t feel like you’re gonna make it.

So as not to be furthermore paralyzed by analysis. This is your brain. Not on drugs, just your regular every day brain.  “And why this and why that…” but then something else comes up:     You are alone.

God No! The horror! You can’t do this alone. You need to be next to someone, touching someone, smelling someone. Why should you not get all of these things and cum? You should cum as much as you physically can. Okay, so then you become aligned with another person. This other person is your friend. You laugh with them now. You cry with them now. They are your go-to human, your number 1 fan, your hero, everything you are into and want to be into. You collide and are physically changed. This happens without thinking. This is your body interacting with your spirit, chemically enhancing your senses and giving you access to love. It isn’t gay. It’s magic.

But what about you? You must not stop living for you, doing for you, trusting in you. You are not what this other person, who happens to always be around wants, needs, thinks of, and is entertained by. You are still committed to the one who came before them and by that I mean the pursuit of your extreme and infinite bliss: Your trial and error, your eternal evolution of what it means to be part of the Universe…. The Where, What, and How…of Being Alive.

  • Demand more from you. You can and will shock the shit out of yourself. Don’t look around what others are doing. Don’t wait for some app to tell you how you feel or what the latest trends are. Do not put yourself on the back burner. Answer the hard questions. Don’t cut corners. Put in the extra credit because investing in yourself is the most important thing you can ever do.
  • The more you share, the more you will know. You can only get what you give. Humans share problems and therefore share solutions. We all learn from mistakes, but they do not have to be our own. Once you “sign on” to the collective experience that we share here and engage in the lives around you, saying your insights out loud [what is true in your heart] is what grants you access to all other truths. Your connection to everyone around you is what keeps you alive.
  • Keep your word. Do as you say you do. Have the will to commit to your greatest challenge. Be the best human for human’s sake. Take pride in your integrity.
  • Find stillness/ silence so that you may hear your inner voice. This is your guide.
  • Fill your life with things that give back. Pursue your hobbies and interests. You are the greatest creator you haven’t yet met. Begin Now. Life is already waiting for you.

You are a satellite: a receiver and you soak in the sunshine and it radiates your insides. You are in harmony. You are not fixed. You are like a plant reaching for the sun, designed with your quirky particulars but grown with and for a magnificent purpose because you are connected to the unknown. Your insides, too, are like liquid, completely formless only to then bloom.

You are divine. Make this life as beautiful as possible.

Ishvara pranidhana (Niyama #5)

Ishvara Pranidhana – ईश्वर प्रणिधान – Surrender to the Divine Consciousness

Ishvara = Divine Consciousness, Pranidhana = to surrender. In this final niyama, ego sheds from you like a snake that’s outgrown its skin. Only the prudent arrive here in their spiritual journey. Please click links below to recap the 4 previous niyamas.

  1. To obtain peace, you must have order and seek purification inside and out
  2. Hone an active contentment and gratitude for being alive
  3. Demonstrate your will-power, concentration, and maturity
  4. Expose and overcome the barriers that routinely deny your own exhalation

What in the hell is a Divine Consciousness? It’s the energy that binds us. We are made of star stuff and the body, we think we own, will decay and become star stuff once again.

Ishvara Pranidhana is the practice of acknowledgement that you are not in control. You never were. Your parents, yes they made you enter this world as a baby, but you were always created from the the Universe and the Universe is connected to everything, therefore you are immense, limitless, and infinite.

  • But how can you see yourself as God-like?

  • How can you let go of who you think you are?  Or who you think you aren’t?

  • Can you just make a change, when you feel you’ve been a certain way for so long? Can you get rid of your judgments?

With Ishvara, the human experience is a continuous flow of exchanges between you and your world.

A Practical Approach : Surrendering with the body to (inevitably) let go of the body.

In a yoga class where the instructor or you have guided your movement with intention, you are practicing ishvara pranidhana. For example, we can back-bend to expose our hearts and throats, in an effort to synchronize our hearts with our communication and free our energetic pathways (chakras) from blockages. We create a posture and move our breath with this intention so that our body can receive Ishvara, the divine intelligence in how to be connected and unified. Yoga= to yoke = to pull up and unite, to be one with the Universe.

Telltale signs you are far from Ishvara Pranidhana:

  • You feel alone and disconnected and take actions that maintain this, or perhaps the separation you feel is one of superiority and you dominate fellow humans with intimidation and manipulation for sport or personal gain.
  • You think surrendering is weak and synonymous with giving up, and this is incongruent with your perception of strength and will to fight for respect.

Introduction to Energetic Pathways in the Body

ENERGETIC PATHWAY: The Intangible MIND & our Physical FORM

Energetic Pathways is explained in Sanskrit by the word Nadi. Nadi’s run through the body passing through energetic centers, also known as Chakras.

Nadi is directly translated into channel or river and is the site where these two forces of our nature are connected. These sites of our Subtle Body are the points of interest for spiritual practitioners and energy healers.

Image result for energetic pathways

The intangible mind is all that we haven’t yet been able to tap into, and is more eloquently stated as our Spirit. This intangible mind are the things we know without even a clue or memory to the when our how we learned them.

  • Intuition

  • Clairvoyance

  • Dreams that come true

  • All the information that comes to you from your higher self

  • That part of you that is connected to all matter in the Universe

The Physical Form is the meat we walk around in, our skin and bones, that which is bound by gravity and bodily functions.

Ida Nadi- starts at the base of the spine and moves its way along the central spine until the left nostril. This energetic river or channel corresponds with our intuitive and creative parts to our being. It is the right hemisphere of the brain but the left side of the body. Feminine and Lunar.

Pingali Nadi- starts at the base of the spine and moves its way along the central spine until the right nostril. It is masculine and solar channel associated with the logical, problem solving and reasoning parts to our being. It is the left hemisphere of the brain but the right side of the body and refers to action. Pingali refers to acting, being, doing, and acquiring.

Shushumna Nadi- The central nadi that begins at the base of the spine and ends at the base of the brain. Both the Ida and Pingala wind around this central channel. Shushumna is the origin of all of the chakras and the idea that spiritual illumination, or enlightenment is possible comes from energizing the Shushumna upwards to the crown chakra thereby creating Samadhi.

Chakra, another Sanskrit word, literally means WHEEL. The seven chakra model are at the exact locations along the spine and central nervous system where all three nadis intersect. (Ida, Pingali, and Shushumna)
